What does "via XRP" mean?
You can simply order AUD → RLUSD. If nobody trades that pair directly, the ledger converts AUD to XRP and XRP to RLUSD for you. This is autobridging, and only XRP can be the bridge.
Why RLUSD?
Over 98% of XRPL stablecoins are dollars, and RLUSD is the largest, so it is the natural yardstick.
What does a high cost mean?
Two things mix here. One is the gap between the on-ledger price and the reference rate, which applies even to small amounts. The other is slippage: thin order books make larger amounts receive less. Each route page shows slippage separately. For costly routes like the euro today, most of the cost is the price gap.
